The field notes
How it got out of hand.
We arrived with a simple backstage plan: watch the show, behave ourselves, and maybe clap on the right beat. Then The B-52s invited us toward the stage, and the plan became historical fiction.
Sandy found the rhythm first. Robert found a microphone and a very narrow definition of “backup vocals.” The band brought the groove, the crowd brought the roar, and suddenly the two of us were part of the loudest field note in the archive.
Nobody remembers who was supposed to leave the stage first. That is probably for the best. The final report says the party was a success and the encore may still be happening somewhere.
