How it got out of hand.
The bridge had one job and chose a very wet afternoon to quit. A picnic trailer sat on the wrong side of the rushing water, the road crew was still deciding what to do, and Robert had already found the keys to the most unreasonable vehicle in the county.
Robert took the wheel of the amphibious rescue truck while Sandy climbed onto the side platform with a bright flag and the confidence of somebody who had been waiting for a mission exactly like this. The truck entered the water like it had been built for the headline.
With the crowd cheering safely from behind the barricades, Robert pulled the trailer onto dry ground and Sandy declared the bridge officially rescued. The only casualty was the picnic schedule, which had become much more flexible.
