The field notes
How it got out of hand.
The snowplows were supposed to clear the course. Then somebody added racing numbers, checkered flags, and a finish line made of hot chocolate. The workday became a grand prix before anyone could find the rule book.
Robert chose the red plow. Sandy chose the turquoise one. They raced side by side through the powder while the crowd cheered from behind the barriers and the mountain lodge prepared an unreasonable number of warm mugs.
Both plows crossed the line covered in snow and pride. The official result was a tie, mostly because the judges wanted to avoid choosing which driver got bragging rights all winter.
